Description

In small groups, ask children to pretend they are presenting a TV news report about a recently-discovered planet, with one child narrating while the others mime. It's great for colouring or making activities, and you can also use it to help you draw the outlines that you’ll need for this activity. Mini Grey’s metafictional tale draws young children’s attention to the playful side of storytelling and feeds their imagination with the question: where do all the lost toys go? This story also contains some elements of science fiction because the story could not have occured in our world as we know it but aliens could possibly take toys from your backyard. Spelling Seeds have been designed to complement Writing Roots by providing weekly, contextualised sequences of sessions for the teaching of spelling that include open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts, linked (where relevant) to other areas of the curriculum and a suggestion of how to extend the investigation into home learning.

Toys in Space - Cast Of Thousands Toys in Space - Cast Of Thousands

Children hypothesise about where the toys could have come from and how they could help find their owners before creating ‘found’ posters to try to reunite them with their owners. Investigate possible conditions on other planets and discuss how alien life-forms might adapt (or look at aliens in other books…. Now ask children to wake up slowly, stretching and showing surprise at finding themselves in such a strange place. It reminds me of Toy Story in a way since each toy clearly has a distinct voice and personality, portrayed with different fonts.Explore ideas through drawing, then choose your favourite and model it from clay, plasticine, or recycled materials. I plan to use this book to explain to our library visitors that we can find things in the library because they are well labelled, and show them title, author and barcodes. Share ideas inspired by this book and extend by reading other stories - there are lots of ideas at the bottom of this feature. Ask children to wake slowly, stretching and showing surprise at finding themselves in a strange place. Share other books such as One True Bear by Ted Dewan, the Teddy Robinson stories by Joan G Robinson (out of print but available second-hand) and Traction Man by Mini Grey, and ask your class to create their own stories and illustrate them.

Turn your favourite alien designs into silhouettes by tracing over the outlines of your drawings, then colouring the whole shape black - or cast your model’s shadow onto a white sheet of paper and draw round it. Things to make and do Make a collection of toys and have a go at describing them together like Wonderdoll does, for example a thoughtful green dinosaur. Make sure everyone understands the idea of a ‘story within a story’ and draw attention to the way the toys help shape the action.Toys in Space is a fun story that can open up discussion about space, the possibility of alien life and space exploration. I also like how they each had their own personality, and the author did a pretty good job with that. Its a science fiction read about a group of toys that get left outside and happen to be watching the stars when they see one getting bigger and bigger. The lead toy, Wonder Doll, tells the toys a story of an alien to distract them from their fear of the dark. Children are given a variety of meaningful writing opportunities throughout the sequence of learning, including giving advice to the Hoctopize who has lost their favourite toy and creating a space log to document the adventure into unknown territory.

So, this group of toys is left out in the garden, and they get taken up into space as they wait for the next day to break. Luckily the alien they do encounter isn’t as scary as he looks, and he’s only stealing toys because he can’t find his own special Cuddles. This book makes the reader really use their imagination while teaching a great lesson on picking up after yourself and treating your toys with respect. I had to stop half way through because it couldn't hold my attention between 7 different toys making comments in speech bubbles, and the vast amount of spot illustrations and and text boxes over full-page spreads. Her books include Egg Drop, The Pea and the Princess (shortlisted for the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal), Biscuit Bear (winner of the Nestlé Children's Book Prize Gold Award), Traction Man is Here (winner of the Boston Horn Book Award and shortlisted for the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal), The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon (winner of the Nestlé Children's Book Prize Bronze Award and winner of the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal), and Traction Man meets Turbodog.Wonder doll makes up a story to tell the toys all about a group of toys left out overnight (just like them). You will find many creative activities based on each book to make reading even more enjoyable and interactive.
