Greases:Although not “oil,” grease can be very handy with firearms – especially heavy-use guns or those where you’re looking for the lubrication to stay where you put it. Grease stays where you put it (it doesn’t run like oil can) but it should be avoided in really cold weather. Remember that this is to help your guns run. It isn’t good for cleaning or preserving firearms because it can’t create that protective polymeric film – you’ll need to get one of the oils in the next section for that.

Gun cleaning oils can be a difficult thing to choose because there’s so many seemingly great options. I’ve slapped this on some of my guns that were covered in gunk and it was impressive how the oil got them to start running again. Once you apply it to parts like the lever and bolt carrier and let it sit for a while, cleaning off the burnt powder residue should be easy. We can think of these more as gun lubricants and protectants than as gun cleaners, even though they do help with preventing the build up of carbon fouling and such. This simple spray can be used as a bore cleaner, lubricant, and protectant. As a protectant, it works on wood, leather, and all types of metal.

Choosing gun oil

The superior compounds in this gun lube withstand harsh conditions to protect your gun against weather elements. Also, it helps to improve the effectiveness of the operating system for long-term use. Pros There seems to be a misconception about gun oil in that most novices believe that oil for your gun is just to lubricate and nothing else (similar to motor oil in an engine). Whether you go with a dedicated oil, or a CLP, a gun oil works basically the same way across the board. These are types of machine oils that create a barrier between surfaces, or between a surface and the air. Airgun barrels do get dirty but don’t need cleaning 24/7. The main problem that occurs with barrels is a buildup of oil or deposits of metal from firing pellets. Oil is common in a spring rifle and often gets in the barrel from firing pellets. The one rule of thumb to bear in mind is that y0u should never oil your barrel. If you oil your barrel it can get inside and damage the mechanisms. Another problem that could occur if you oil your barrel is dieseling. This is where the oil combusts as you fire a pellet through the gun, and over time, this process can damage your seals and result in loss of air in your rifle. Summary: These don’t offer any real benefit to the actual process of removing carbon fouling and such from your gun.

Rifles, both full-bore and rimfire, are in many respects the same. Though they are far more of a precision instrument than your shotgun, it is still rust that is the primary enemy. Like all things of metal construction, the exterior of a barrel needs maintaining to ensure it doesn’t rust. This is a fairly easy process though and doesn’t require any specialist equipment. However, if you’re looking for your first gun oil, or the one gun oil that absolutely every gun owner should have, this is it. While it might not be as good as our oils for lubrication/function, it still helps reduce friction and keeps corrosion away from your gun.
